post-MIDI report
Thanks to the fantastic organizers who came up with the brilliant idea of going by bus to the destination - Zhenjiang, we then had a beautiful bus fully decorated with ENO sticks, a lovely bus hostess who strip danced humming "zhong nan hai, zhong nai hai, chou yan zhi chou zhong nan hai", a generous goodie bag including an energy drink, an apple (an apple a day keeps the doctor away), bus itinerary and notice and a ticket to Paris (ok, I'm just dreaming on the last one), and a group of 50 on-board passengers who love to be part of the 10th MIDI music festival (who has nothing to do during the May holiday so we just might as well do something to kill the time :P ). So here we go, on the mission "n0g0". I'm not so sure if it has anything to do with Nasa, but according to reliant source the word was evolved from "logo", which makes sense to me.
No matter how many people showed up, what bands came to play in comparision to Strawberry Modern Sky taking place same time in Beijing, it was still an event that made me proud of. I'd love to be there and I'm happy I had. The impression is a rapidly increasing amount of Chinese young people are showing more interests in Chinese sub-culture and support with efforts. Social acceptance grew to tolerate more musicians who only focus on the lifestyle rather than the beaten track of choosing a proper career.
The change might not only happen over night but it's actually happening and I'm the witness. 15 years ago there were no bars in Shanghai. Nightlife to Chinese equals to debauchery. 10 years ago bars started to settle on Hengshan Rd. Now we have cool venues where welcomes all musicians as logo, yyt, shelter, zhijiang, artlab...90's rock stars sing about school and love, 00's rock stars sing about lost and found. It's an change society and I'm excited to be the part of the evolution. As to the music itself, I'm sure it will improve given time.
BTW, I don't like Deerhoof. I love some songs of Carsick Cars and Dingma. I want to check out Banana Monkeys and Boys Climbing Ropes.
(Damn, I feel like writing on an IELTS paper)
